Accessibly Abundant

For many who aren’t in the daily work of providing homeless services, there seems to be the existence of an ironic helplessness, or a sense of being so overwhelmed with the issue that they can’t begin to know how to care. Often, homelessness becomes a problem that is believed to have no answers. With this mindset, it is believed there is a lack of access to impactful solutions. There isn’t enough, or maybe anything can be done to create change. Resources are so scarce there is no need in even trying. Or people have convinced themselves that they have no skill set or anything of value to share that would be meaningful to someone experiencing homelessness. So, they choose not to engage or access anyone who is.

We at the ROC refute all of that! We recognize that here in our great communities of Hamilton County, there is abundance! There is an abundance of resources, and we believe there is a potential for an overwhelming amount of support to be had for our population of people who are daily experiencing the suffering related to homelessness. Streams must be created and channeled to allow this abundance of resources and untapped support to flow down to where the people who are in need of these things are! That’s the role the ROC is looking to play. We want to be a big ROC boulder that smashes the dams that hold back the much-needed resources and support that already exist or very likely could exist.

But what is it that strengthens us? What is the driving force behind us that would allow increased access to this abundance?

As one ROC Star stated recently: “What gives the ROC any kind of authority when it comes to the issue of homelessness is that we are doing the work daily. And the work is continuing to show up. That’s how the work starts. That’s how the work continues. And that’s how the work gets done. You have to keep showing up for these people. You have to be face-to-face with them. Be in the dirt with them for a bit, get on the same level, and listen to what they have to say and teach you.”

It is when we access the people in the midst of the issue that the ways to alleviate the issue become abundantly more clear! What we are discovering is that the ways to alleviate the issues are through finding ways of increasing a person’s access to the abundance of resources that exist in the community. This is why there was a struggle on what to title this post. Should it be “Accessibly Abundant” or “Abundantly Accessible”? They go hand in hand. More access leads to more abundance. More abundance leads to more access.

More ROC’ing leads to more Rolling! Which means we are going to keep doing the work of accessing those experiencing homelessness as close as we are allowed to. Otherwise, it’s like trying to hit a target without ever looking where you’re aiming or being too far away to have a good shot at it. We want to hit the bullseye every time, and in a lot of ways, we feel like we are.

So, if you don’t know how to contribute to solving the issue of homelessness. Well, first, realize you can, and second of all, a good way to come to that realization is to get closer. If you do, there is a stronger likelihood your aim will become abundantly clearer.
