Heart Disease
The picture below is of a camp in the middle of a bunch of empty burial crypts. The location and reality of this camp is gripping every time we visit it. This is especially the case for every person’s first visit here. There is such a powerful scene seen here of injustice and ultimate desperation for life while being surrounded by the death of compassion and mercy for those experiencing homelessness.
People have been rejected, isolated, and driven from the society of the housed so far that they now live in a place meant to house the dead. What does this say of where we are as a society? If we say, “Home is where the heart is.” And if we apply that statement to our culture and consider the fact that there will be over 6 million people who experience homelessness in the United States this year, then this is the type of place that some of those people are currently calling home. What does that say about the culture, the community, and the country’s heart? This must be a symptom of a heart disease.
With what we are doing at the ROC, we hope to be working as a part of the cure!
